چکیده

The presented research has been carried out within the European project Intelligent Roads (INTRO). The major objective followed was to assess the potential of optical fiber for pavement monitoring in comparison with classical strain gauges. Thus, both measurement devices have been tested under the same conditions in a full scale Accelerated Pavement Testing (APT) at LAVOC. This facility allows the user to control different parameters such as loading configuration and temperature and, as a matter of facts, limit the disturbances. A total number of 10 strain gauges and 8 optical fibers have been installed and tested for various conditions. This study showed rather consistent and comparable results for both optical fiber and strain gauges measurements. The comparison with calculated deformation also highlighted the consistency of the measurements results. The sensitivity of the measurement system has also been highlighted and permitted to conclude with some recommendations for further developments. 2 OPTICAL FIBER USED FOR TESTING

Review of glass fiber grid use for pavement reinforcement and APT experiments at IFSTTAR

Reinforcement using an interlayer system has been demonstrated for more than four decades as a multi-purpose solution to improve performance, to extend service life and thus to reduce maintenance costs of road pavements. Among a large number of existing interlayer systems, glass fiber grids have shown effective use in pavement reinforcement with a hot mix asphalt overlay. Recently they have rec...

Functionality Enhancement of Industrialized Optical Fiber Sensors and System Developed for Full-Scale Pavement Monitoring

Pavements always play a predominant role in transportation. Health monitoring of pavements is becoming more and more significant, as frequently suffering from cracks, rutting, and slippage renders them prematurely out of service. Effective and reliable sensing elements are thus in high demand to make prognosis on the mechanical properties and occurrence of damage to pavements. Therefore, in thi...

An Overview and Feasibility Study of Fabrication Technology and Characterization Techniques of Erbium-Doped Fiber amplifiers in Iran

In this paper, a brief summary of different methods of fabrication of optical preform and fiber is reviewed. Several methods of incorporation of erbium ions into optical preforms are studied. Characterization of the fabricated erbium doped fibers including measurements of refractive index profile, absorption, fluorescence and gain spectra and metastable lifetime are described. It is also expres...

Concrete Block Pavement for Low Volume Roads

Concrete block pavement (CBP) is a durable pavement for carrying light as well as heavy loads, and it is being used widely for construction of city streets, parking places, gas stations, container stacking yards, residential areas and low volume roads. This paper presents the findings of a laboratory investigation on structural behaviour of CBP. Plate load and Accelerated Pavement tests were ca...

A Research on Low Modulus Distributed Fiber Optical Sensor for Pavement Material Strain Monitoring

The accumulated irreversible deformation in pavement under repeated vehicle loadings will cause fatigue failure of asphalt concrete. It is necessary to monitor the mechanical response of pavement under load by using sensors. Previous studies have limitations in modulus accommodation between the sensor and asphalt pavement, and it is difficult to achieve the distributed monitoring goal. To solve...
